Definition : Drawings that is more realistic than reality.
They wanted to expose the nature of human unconscious that how did people reacted against the global wars. It went against bourgeois, and sought for romantic faith in the power of art. It spread as poem, literature, and visual art throughout Europe, and North America. It is originated from the Dada movement, had similar idea, but the Dada movement wasn't enough to express their artistic feelings. Surrealists wanted to express their revolutionary feelings in their arts as more organized, and critique against everything before surrealism. Surrealist started to move over to the U.S., and spread their artistic movement, as they protested against Fascism, Nazism government. Time period : 1924 - late 1960s (It started after ww1, and came back up after ww2) Involved people : Andre Breton; led the movement as he declared the manifesto of surrealism Max Ernst; surrealist, poet Savador Dalí; surrealism film maker Rene Magritte; surrealist, painter Countries : West Europe, North Africa, U.S. Max Ernst was the artist, who drew mostly figurative, and abstract thing. In this picture, elephant is compared to tank, and spaces are full with dull, dark color that it shows how he felt about the first world war was destructive.
