Bauhaus
What is Bauhaus?
What is Bauhaus? Bauhaus is an art school that was found by Walter Gropius in 1919 in a German city of Weimar. It was a school where the students could freely express their work through different kinds of art, and they receiver theoretical and practical training in all different spheres of art. Gropius was influenced by the art of late 19th early 20th century and it was his kind of response to the Victorian England art. Gropius wanted to unite different artists to embrace technological developments, or future, because technology was the sight of future. Because Gropius was an architect, his main goal was to unite artists and architects and designers to contribute their ideas into modern buildings. Gropius had this idea that the building should be the center of teaching all arts, which where the name Bauhaus comes in which means “House of Building.” The buildings that were built by the Bauhaus technique were light, opened and clean. The teachers who taught at Bauhaus were teachers of highest calibre. With the improvement of different machines, Bauhaus really improved in building of furniture. Due to the Nazi movement and political pressure, Walter Gropius stepped down, and the school started to be under the control of Hannes Mayer. The school became less rigid, and students started to work more on textiles and different types of furniture, as well as lamps. Even though it only lasted for 14 years, the legacy of Bauhaus remains until present day. What we consider as modern and contemporary art uses many elements of Bauhaus.
